My First WCMY Experience
I still remember the morning I arrived at WordCamp Malaysia and I didn’t really know what to expect.

But the moment I walked in, everything changed. The room was filled with good vibes; people chatting, laughing, and getting ready to learn. It felt like walking into a big, friendly family that instantly made me feel welcome.
This was also my first time pushing myself to meet new people and talk to experts and honestly, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
Tip: Don’t be shy, even if you come alone. Everyone is super friendly! Just smile, say hi, and ask something simple like, “Is this your first WordCamp too?” And please, come early! It gives you time to get comfortable, grab a coffee, and explore the venue before the sessions start. Who knows you might even meet amazing people right at the registration counter?
Getting Ready for Your First WordCamp
If this is your first time, here are a few things that really helped me prepare.
Malaysia’s weather can be unpredictable — sunny in the morning and rainy in the afternoon. So, bring a light jacket or umbrella just in case. If you’re unsure, you can check the latest weather forecast at Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia‘s website.

Dress smart but comfortable because you’ll be walking a lot between sessions. When you feel good, you’ll naturally stand out and connect better with people. Pack light — just bring a notebook, pen, water bottle, and power bank. Trust me, a heavy bag will make you tired quickly!

Tip for international travellers: Don’t forget to bring a universal adapter for your devices!
And don’t forget the goodie bag! It’s full of cool stuff, stickers, and helpful info about the event. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to the speakers, organizers, or sponsors. They’re friendly and love to share their stories.

Some of the fun merchandise I got last year!
If you’re using public transport, plan your trip early. You can also download the Moovit app. It’s super helpful for finding the best route to the venue, whether by bus, train, or even walking.

The Experience — Learning, Laughing & Growing
I joined a few sessions that really opened my eyes — one about building websites faster using AI, another about writing better online content, and even one on building a trusted community for your business.
But the best part? It wasn’t just the talks. It was the people. The random coffee-break chats, the laughter between sessions, and that feeling of “we’re all in this together.”
I came for knowledge but left with something even better; confidence. I met mentors who shared their experiences, made new friends who inspired me, and discovered opportunities I never imagined before.
That’s the magic of WordCamp — you don’t just learn, you grow.
And of course, I can’t forget Contributor Day. This one of my favorite parts! It’s the day when people come together to give back to WordPress — through design, translations, documentation, or ideas. Even if you’re not a coder, you’ll learn so much and feel proud to be part of the global WordPress community.
How to Network Like a Pro
Networking at WordCamp Malaysia is super fun and easy. Write your name clearly on your name tag so people can remember you. Don’t be shy to join group photos or take selfies. It’s a great way to connect and remember the moment!
You can also prepare a QR code to share your LinkedIn, website, or even WhatsApp — yes, WhatsApp has its own QR code too! You can print it in pocket size and use it like a mini business card. It’s smart, fast, and convenient.
“Keep the Spirit Alive”
When WordCamp ended, I honestly didn’t want to go home. I met so many new friends, learned so much, and left full of fresh ideas and motivation.
After the event, I connected with people on LinkedIn, shared my favorite moments online, and started applying what I learned. Even small steps made a big difference!
If you’ve ever thought about joining WordCamp Malaysia, just do it. Don’t overthink Just come with an open heart, ready to learn, share, and meet amazing people.
You’ll go home not just with notes, but with memories, friendships, and inspiration that stay with you long after the event ends.
See you at WordCamp Malaysia 2025!
